“Very little of the current debate about business ethics has to do with serious ethical problems. Most so-called ethical failures in business are either the result of illegal activities or of breaches of civil contracts – often in situations where there is an imbalance of information or power and one of the parties has taken advantage of its position.
I suggest that the real problems, in Western democracies at least, relate to ensuring that companies comply with existing standards set out in existing laws and that company staff act in the interests of the company rather than their own personal interests where these conflict. When a society agrees that additional rights or duties should be observed, it is the responsibility of its Government to make the ethical decisions, to enshrine them in legislation and ensure compliance.”
Editor’s Note: this is part of a series of ethics-related articles on the site, of varying quality; of the other articles, I recommend “Santa Claus Syndrome” by Professor Rick Roskin
