UN/CEFACT is the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business. Its mission is to improve the ability of business, trade and administrative organizations, from developed, developing and transitional economies, to exchange products and relevant services effectively – and so contribute to the growth of global commerce. Its goals include:
– Expanding global commerce
– Reducing bureaucracy and increasing transparency
– Creating better data flows through electronic commerce
– Lowering transaction costs
– Developing a network of supporting institutions
– Improving private and public sector management
“With reduced tariff barriers came a realization of the importance of procedural trade barriers, a great interest in seeing procedural barriers reduced or eliminated, and the beginning of significant work in this area by UN/ECE. This work has resulted in trade facilitation techniques, recommendations and norms which have been implemented across the world. As a consequence, UN/ECE has developed a centre of excellence in trade facilitation within the United Nations system and, today, over 1,500 private- and public-sector experts participate in the work.”
