Biz/Ed Business Series (Spreadsheet-Based Tutorial)

Editor’s Note: All newly updated in July 2024…

This excellent set of spreadsheets was created by Duncan Williamson back in 2000 for Biz/Ed, which was an excellent site but is not defunct (you can still find it and the original spreadsheets on the Internet Archive). He recently got in a nostalgic mood I think and saw that I had referenced his earlier work, which he had thought was lost to history. After that, he decided to update the original spreadsheets and he created a couple of new ones to discuss Dynamic Array Functions, which didn’t exist until somewhat recently. Finally, he also created a PDF workbook from the original notes.

At this Google Drive link, you will find eleven MS Excel files that offer introductions to various business topics along with illustrations of how a spreadsheet can be used to work with those topics. Spreadsheets include:

  1. Tasker: Introduction to balance sheet and income statement (covers basics of financial accounting)
  2. Markups and margins (discusses different ways to measure profit)
  3. Gearing (looks at different forms of financing; gearing is the relationship between long-term capital and capital employed)
  4. Depreciation (gives overview to concept and discusses different methods)
  5. Cost analysis (looks at analyzing the costs of an organization)
  6. Cost volume profit analysis (further develops cost analysis module and applies its principles in a variety of settings – includes break-even, margin of safety and profit volume)
  7. Budgeting (master budget exercise looking at cash budget, income statement, and balance sheet)
  8. Elasticity (looks at elasticities of demand, income, cross, advertising, and supply)
  9. Profit maximisation (focused on economist’s view of costs, revenue, and production opportunities but does offer some contrasts with accountant’s view)
  10. Dynamic Array Function (covering RANDARRAY, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE, SORT, SORTBY, and FILTER). There is a student’s copy and a teacher’s copy.

I have also downloaded all the files from the Google Drive link and combined them together in one ZIP file which you can download below.
