Since the days of the industrial revolution, companies have struggled with the issue of what to do with their unused assets.

Recently, the idea of selling idle or obsolete assets – so-called “asset disposition”- has grown in popularity as companies recognize the extent of their equipment stockpiles and their potential value. The idea of selling idle assets is further spurred by rapidly evolving B2B (business-to-business)Internet marketplaces that provide a new online channel for asset disposition.

This paper highlights the findings of the
A.T. Kearney study of the asset disposition marketplace and offers possible reasons why so few companies employ asset disposition solutions, and why even fewer use the Internet and the B2B marketplace to dispose of assets. We also introduce a framework to characterize the evolving “generations” of online providers and offer a checklist for corporations to assess whether or not they are good candidates for online asset disposition. Finally, we highlight the characteristics that corporations should look for when selecting an online asset disposition firm.
