Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus, an economist who founded Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, was a participant in the Global Poverty Conference sponsored by Stanford Business School’s Center for Global Business and the Economy.
At the 2004 conference Yunus described the work of Grameen Bank, a pioneer in micro lending that makes money available to those living in extreme poverty, especially women, so that they can launch their own businesses. “It’s a great honor for us and for Bangladesh,” Yunus told the BBC on Oct. 13 as the prize was announced. “It’s a recognition of our work. As a Bangladeshi, I’m proud that we have given something to the world. Our work has now been recognized by the whole world.”
